I am so thrilled be making my New York City debut this December! I will be performing in the holiday class, Babes in Toyland, an operetta by Victor Herbert. The show is being produced by the Little Orchestra Society at Avery Fisher Hall in Lincoln Center. The Little Orchestra Society is celebrating 65 years of performances this season. Their mission is to "share the vitality of live classical music and to build future audiences by presenting innovative concerts that incorporate multiple art forms to foster a deeper understanding and enjoyment of music. With original productions designed by their artistic staff, consulting producers and program designers, the Orchestra's mission is to make concertgoing and engagement in the live performing arts a life-long pursuit."Take a trip to Toyland for the holidays with this updated production of Victor Herbert's extravaganza, Babes in Toyland. An array of beloved characters performs March of the Toys, Toyland and other favorite tunes.Babes in Toyland weaves together several Mother Goose nursery rhymes into one delightful Christmas-themed classic. You may remember Walt Disney's 1961 film version starring Ray Bolger, Tommy Sands and Annette Funicello. You'll recognize an array of beloved characters performing memorable songs like March of the Toys, Toyland and other favorite tunes.For those who would like to join in the fun, tickets are available through the Little Orchestra Society's website at http://www.littleorchestra.org/. Hope to see you there!Photo Credit: Little Orchestra Society

Community in the Midst of Hurricane Sandy

Well, I weathered my very first hurricane. I was very fortunate not to experience life threatening damage in my neighborhood of Astoria, Queens. Aside from a few down trees, our neighborhood was unscathed hanging on to power as Sandy devastated the eastern seaboard. My brother Nate and I took all necessary precautions, stocking up on canned goods and other non perishables, candles, batteries, flashlights, matches, water and so on.It is hard to believe that just across the river, thousands of people were without power for nearly a week. With transportation limited or non-existent, I stayed away from Manhattan this week. Work was cancelled as the event company I work for was with out power and most, if not all, events were cancelled. Finally, this Friday, I ventured into lower Manhattan to lend a helping hand. One of my church friends and I joined an organized group called GOLES: Good Old Lower East Side (www.goles.org) and helped by visiting two high rises on Avenue D. In groups of 10, we climbed the stairs to the top of the building carrying as much bottled water, fresh fruit, canned goods and sandwiches as we could. We knocked on doors to offer what we had and make sure elderly were taken care of and no one needed medical assistance.As we finished visiting the second high-rise, we witnessed the power come on for these folks who were without for nearly a week. You could hear people shouting for joy in the streets and the tenants came out into the hallway to rejoice. I met one woman who was taking care of her 87 year old mother who only spoke Spanish. The woman said she had been worried all week, mainly for her elderly mom. She told me that her mother asked her that morning why she was so stressed out. Her mom assured her and said, "This was my childhood. Now you know what it was like for me when I was a kid. This is nothing!" They were a precious family. You could feel the love. They were so grateful to know that people cared enough to check on them. It was a really nice moment.I know the recovery and relief efforts will continue. As power is restored, people are still in need of food and resources. In a big city like New York, that can often feel vast, impersonal and lonely, it's amazing to be reminded that community exists all around us. We create it with our compassion, our actions and generosity. Let's keep it going, no matter where you live!Love,Amanda

Miss New York 2012

One of the first things I did when I moved to New York City was email the Miss New York organization and see how I could get involved. I thought that in a city where I knew very few people, I would find instant friends in the Miss America program. I was right! So thank you to the Miss New York program for letting me get involved.The Miss New York organization has an exemplary mentoring program. They hold a sweeper pageant in which 6 contestants are crowned and given the opportunity to compete at Miss New York. Since these contestants don't have an executive director, they are given a mentor. In New York, their mentors consist of former state titleholders who serve as the contestants confidant and coach.I was asked to mentor, Miss Western New York Jesse Ladoue. It was such a pleasure to work with Jesse and watch her compete for the Miss New York crown. Jesse launched a campaign to raise funds for Children's Miracle Network called 1,000 Cards, 1,000 Dollars. It was Jesse's goal to collect 1,000 handmade cards to personally deliver to CMN patients and to raise atleast $1,000. I'm so proud to say that Jesse not only reached her goal of $1,000, but she exceeded it. Jesse placed in the top ten and won the Ken Berry Spirit Award! She is a Miss America in my book as she treats everyone with respect and love and competed with great integrity and heart. Way to go Jesse!Top 11 Miss New York 2012Back: Semi-Finalists Acacia Courtney-Gotham City, Jamie Lynn Macchia-Staten Island, People's Choice Winner Mikhaila Leinbach-Southern NY, Christina Moore-Verrazano, Shannon Oliver-MetropolitanFront: 3rd RU Maria DeSantis-Brooklyn, 1st RU Katie Berry-Manhattan, Miss New York 2012 Mallory Hagan (New York City), 2nd RU Nina Davuluri-Greater Rochester, 4th RU Desiree Wiley-Niagara

You can go home again!

It was my great honor and pleasure to sing at the Miss Ohio 2012 Pageant this year. It's always fun to play the role of former Miss Ohio, visit with old friends and watch as a new class of women carry on the legacy and mission of Miss America.Miss West Central, Elissa McCracken Miss Ohio 2012.I had the opportunity to address the Miss Ohio contestants early in the week and share with them my perspective on the Miss America Organization. We talked about the MAO as a self-improvement program that would help them to develop and grow into their prospective futures. Whether it be to win Miss Ohio or move on to other great opportunities, it is important to reflect on the Miss America experience and understand its relevance in one's life. Winning Miss Ohio isn't the be-all-end-all. Rather, competing in the MAO at the local, state and/or national level is a stepping stone towards the future. A stepping stone that only a select few even get to attempt. We are blessed to live in a country that provides this opportunity for women, encouraging them to shine in such a forum.We then talked about service and how it is the responsibility of each titleholder to uphold the standard of excellence expected in a Miss America. Competing at your state pageant is not a time to ask for permission to be Miss State. It is a time to carry one's self as a Miss America in thought, word and deed. Each titleholder has a crown, and though only one will acquire the state crown, each crown carries with it great responsibility. As each contestant volunteers through their personal platform, raises precious dollars for Children's Miracle Network and spreads the message and values of the Miss America Organization, they should proceed as if they are already Miss America. In turn, they should inspire others to find their inner Miss America as we all work together to instigate change and improve the quality of life for others. I was extremely proud of all the young women who competed. It is a pleasure to know and work with many of them and to watch them grow through this incredible self-improvement process we call Miss America. What an amazing ideal to strive for in our every day lives, crown or no crown. All of my students excelled at this years pageant, and I'm so honored to have played a small part in their development and journey towards the crown. I must recognize the incredible army of volunteers and sponsors who make the Miss Ohio program a success year in and year out. We are truly blessed to have a family of people who are willing to work and sacrifice for this great program. The city of Mansfield has embraced Miss Ohio for decades, and I know I am eternally grateful to each person who gives of their time, talents and finances. When I enter the walls of the Renaissance Theater in Mansfield, OH, it's as if hundreds of arms wrap around me offering support and unconditional love. We are blessed to live in a country that provides this opportunity for women, encouraging them to shine in such a forum.

We then talked about service and how it is the responsibility of each titleholder to uphold the standard of excellence expected in a Miss America.

A long time educator and professional teaching artist, I am thrilled to be accepting voice students into my New York City vocal studio. I guide young singers to develop a strong foundation in musicianship, vocal technique and song interpretation. Recitals and workshop opportunities are made available throughout the year. All styles of singing are welcome! My teaching philosophy centers, not only on providing sound pedagogical guidance, but to enrich the total being of each individual student. Lessons are tailor made to suit your needs. I am passionate about helping children and teens find the confidence they need to achieve their dreams, not only on stage, but in their every day lives. An active participation in the performing arts helps young people develop poise, confidence, discipline, and leadership qualities that will serve them for a life time.Let's work together to make beautiful music and have fun while we do it!Lessons will be taught at the beautiful 853 7th Ave. Rehearsal Studios (between 54th & 55th).Teaching a workshop for elementary school children as a teaching artist for SMARTS in Ohio.
Exciting news!In addition to offering monthly coaching intensives and pageant workshops in northeast Ohio, I am now offering pageant coaching and talent consulting in the greater New York City metro area. I have relocated to NYC, and am thrilled to be able to expand my teaching studios. I believe a successful pageant contestant develops beauty and confidence from the inside out. A former Miss Ohio and talent award winner at Miss America, I am an active pageant coach and judge offering guidance in all areas of contestant development. Having performed for audiences all over the world, I understand what it takes to capture an audience's attention, onstage and off. I also hold a Master of Science degree in Entertainment Business in which I studied marketing, artist and project management, and executive leadership, giving me a wealth of knowledge to pull from when helping my clients develop their competition package. I have personally benefited from the self-improvement process provided by an active participation in pageants, and I am passionate about sharing my knowledge and tips with other young pageant contestants. Having performed for audiences all over the world, I understand what it takes to capture an audience's attention, onstage and off.
Starting the new year off right!

Things have been busy for Amanda Beagle Vocal Studio and Pageant Prep. This January, my pageant clients started the year off right with our first ever Pageant Bootcamp! I was thrilled with the turnout, and so happy with the progress each contestant made for themselves.My private vocal studio continues to grow, and it's so rewarding to work with such talented young singers. The vocal studio has presented new and exciting challenges as I currently have students ranging from age 6 to 56! It's never too late to get started!I'm thrilled to host a live mock interview for pageant contestants this February 19th at the Fred Astaire Dance Studio in Youngstown, OH. Contestants will interview in front of experienced pageant judges, seeking to improve their skills and enhance their performance as they continue to compete for the title of their dreams. Email me for details!I've recently begun offering my image consulting and public speaking preparation services to political candidates. It has been such a thrill to apply my own experience to the political arena. After all, vying for the job of Miss America is a lot like running for office. It is always a pleasure to help people shine in their best light.I was honored to sing for First Night Youngstown this year. It was a beautiful New Years Eve, and it was a joy to celebrate at home this year with family and friends. In between teaching and coaching, I've been maintaining my own training privately in NYC and continue to audition for theater and commercial work in NYC, OH, and PA.I hope all is well with you and that you are enjoying a fabulous start to 2012. Keep in touch and I'll try to do the same!!!!Performing at First Night Youngstown with my musical director and friend, Jack Ciarniello!

Happy Holidays from me to you!

It's the most wonderful time of the year, and I feel so blessed to be in the States this holiday season. I am enjoying the changes of the seasons and am thrilled to experience the holidays with family and friends. I just want to remind everyone that I am available to entertain for holiday parties and events. And don't forget about my debut solo album "Think of Me," which would make the perfect stocking stuffer this Christmas. Since it is officially December, I wish you all a Merry Christmas and most prosperous and happy new year.Amanda Beagle | Think of Me | CD Baby

We Sow and We Reap

It's been two months since I returned to dry land, and life has been busy and full of change. Once again, life introduces the fear and exhilaration of the unknown. I have been splitting my time between NYC and Ohio, auditioning and coaching so as to further my own professional endeavors. I was also the headliner for this year's Festa Italiana Washington D.C. It was an honor to be invited to sing in our nation's capital and to celebrate my own Italian heritage through some of my favorite songs.I launched my pageant and talent coaching business and have been working with some new clients competing in the Miss Ohio, Miss Connecticut, National American Miss, and American Coed programs. It is such a thrill for me to be home, and once again working hands on with young girls and women who are driven and passionate about service, scholarship and self improvement. We've been having a great time, developing new talent routines, drilling interview skills and building solid competition packages for each of these young women. I'm excited to watch them continue to grow, learn and pursue their dreams. I've launched a new blog, www.yourpageantcoach.blogspot.com devoted to pageant coaching advice and have been having a lot of fun researching and writing articles about various personal development topics. Please visit me there to see all of the exciting things we've been chatting about.It is interesting to me that once we achieve one goal, we find another we long for just as much. In the midst of all the plans we make for ourselves, life continues to happen whether we realize it or not. I feel I have experienced so much already in this life. I've performed in various professional arenas, I've completed two college degrees, I've lost dear loved ones, and have experienced great failure and the sweetness of success. All of this culminates when I teach and mentor my students. I seek to help them with all of my heart, and wish them great fulfillment in their endeavors. At the same time, I continually seek to improve, grow and experience new adventures personally and professionally for myself. We all grow together in this life. It is truly thrilling, and I am blessed to have such wonderful friends, family and students who help make this life sweet and worthwhile.The more I experience in my personal and professional life, I realize how important reinvention is. I feel like I am constantly reinventing myself. We soar and then we rest. We fail and then we rebuild. We sow and we reap.Right now, I sow.

REVISITING FAMILY TRADITIONS IS FOOD FOR THE SOUL

Sometimes life's adventures are right at home. Revisiting family traditions is food for the soul after spending almost a year away from home. This adventure took place in Mama Beagle's kitchen. In the Beagle home, the kitchen is the center of all the action. It's really the heart of the home. It's where we cook together, reminisce together, complain together, laugh together, argue together, and yes, even at times cry together.

My brother Jason came home last weekend to help my mom and I can hot peppers. Now, my grandparents were master canners. They had a garden that encompassed their entire back yard, and canned everything they could get their hands on. Definitely a great way to make those wonderful garden treasures last year round and a smart way to save money on food. Well, my mom's hot peppers have been a favorite for my brothers and I and family friends for years. And of course, when my dad was alive, he liked them so much, it's the one thing my mom could convince him to help with in the kitchen.

We picked up at least 3 bushels of beautiful peppers of red, orange, and green from a couple different local roadside stands. They were beautiful as I love foods that radiate sunshine. First we washed the peppers and dried them with our "mapines." For those that don't know, that's what the Italian side of my family called a dish towel. You didn't have napkins at the dinner table when my mom was growing up, you had a mapine. Anyway, once that was done, let the chopping commence. Jay and I dawned our big yellow rubber gloves and went to town. I'm proud to say, I remembered not to touch my eyes this year. In addition to chopping peppers, we added carrots, celery, and black olives to the mix that we soaked in equal parts water and vinegar. We filled five large kettles to the brim with chopped peppers. Mom's instruction as we chopped was that once you get a good layer in the pot, you have to salt them with canning salt. Apparently this draws some of the liquid out of the peppers. Just as a side note, when you are cooking with Mama Beags, there are no real measurements. It's always a pinch or this and a handful of that. So, good luck!

After sanitizing all the jars, we put large pieces of garlic, a teaspoon of salt and a teaspoon of dried oregano in each jar, and filled them to the brim with our mixture of peppers and veggies, drowned in vegetable oil. Apparently, olive oil congeals in the refrigerator, and it would be much more expensive to use olive oil in this endeavor. After carefully boiling each jar to seal the deal, we ended up with 75 jars of peppers, most of which will be given away throughout the year.

So, it was great to be in the kitchen that day, feeling the love of my family again. Next time you feel the need to reconnect with your loved ones, I say cook up something good. Something that takes time and a little elbow grease. This will get you chatting and laughing in no time.

Bon appetite.

It's GREAT to be home!!

Hi Everyone!

I just want to thank everyone who followed my amazing adventures this past year. I've been home just a week and a half, and I'm finally starting to feel normal. It is definitely strange transitioning from ship to shore. You basically go from living in a bubble to reentering your life full of the friends, family, and the chaos of old. I'm so thankful for the friends I made as a result of this experience. I know we'll all keep in touch and see each other again soon, perhaps on the streets of NYC in the coming months. It is quite an adjustment not seeing them each and every day.

Mama Beagle and my Aunt Marilyn joined me for my final week onboard the Statendam. Neither of them had been to Alaska, so it was great to experience the ports of call with them. We took a train ride through the Tongass National Rainforest along the route of the Klondike Gold Rush. It was amazing, especially when you realize that people actually took on the difficult terrain by foot in the hopes that they would score a fortune. I introduced mom and aunt to my favorite stop in Skagway, Sugar Mamas, where we had rhubarb cupcakes with cream cheese frosting. Yum! The highlight of the trip was our whale watching tour where we actually saw at least seven Orcas, or killer whales, teaching a baby whale to hunt. I felt like we had a front row seat to the Discovery Channel, as these whales were feeding on a sea lion. It was pretty amazing. Sad for the sea lion, but that's the circle of life, right?

Now that I'm home, everyone asks, "what's next for the adventures of Amanda Beagle?" My answer is that only time will tell. Stayed tuned, and I promise to fill you in as the adventures present themselves.

Thanks again for reading! It's great to be home!

Love,
Amanda

Breathtaking Alaska!

Hi everyone! Just a quick update. Alaska is too beautiful for words. I never tire of the amazing scenery, glaciers at every turn, and wildlife I have never experienced before. Coming from Ohio where everything is flat, I am in constant awe of the grandeur of the mountains. I have participated in some fun and exciting excursion in the past few weeks including ziplining through the Tongass rain forest, several hiking trips, driving four wheelers up a mountain in Haines and visiting Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau. I can't believe this journey is quickly coming to an end. Traveling and visiting other parts of the world has been so meaningful, rewarding and rejuvenating for me. I'd be lying if I didn't say that living on a cruise ship for 8 months does take its toll. I try to focus on the positive, because I truly value this experience as a once in a lifetime adventure and know I will look back on this time with great appreciation. However, I am really looking forward to the simple things in life, like being around family and friends, ordering pizza when ever I want, and the freedom to drive myself where ever I want to go. I'm so thankful for each day.My friends and I rode four by fours up a mountain at a place call Takshanuk Mountain Trail.
A pilgrimage every Goonie should take!

As the Statendam transitioned from the Caribbean season to the Alaskan season, we enjoyed a repositioning cruise that featured some wonderful highlights of the Pacific Coast. We visited Astoria, Oregon, where in 1810, the town's namesake, John Jacob Astor, sent the Astor Expedition to set up their primary trading post for his Pacific Fur Company. This was ground breaking development as Astoria is noted as the first permanent U.S. settlement on the Pacific coast. Astoria's prominence as a trading post was instrumental in expanding America's economic power throughout the continental interior and throughout the Pacific. Now, for movie buffs, Astoria is notable for providing the backdrop for many of our favorite films. Kindergarten Cop, Overboard, Short Circuit, Free Willy I and II, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III and many other movies were filmed on location in this picturesque seaside town. But for me, the most important one was Steven Spielberg's, The Goonies. As a result my friends and I embarked on a pilgrimage any true Goonie would have to take while happening upon this charming town. This day brought me to a childlike euphoria steeped in nostalgia. My friends and I crammed into a small cabin and watched The Goonies the night before so we could relive our favorite parts of the movie. From the Truffle Shuffle to memorable lines like "Goonies never say die, " we were armed and ready for a hike up to the iconic house. My younger brother, Nathan and I used to watch The Goonies almost everyday when we were kids. We know every line and could go on for hours in a battle over who has more knowledge of "the Goon-docks." In fact, we did, via text message along my hike. My friends and I took a bus into town, and then followed railroad tracks for at least two miles along the waterfront before we spotted the house perched on a hill in a quaint neighborhood. It was funny, because our group continued to grow as more and more crewmembers were taking the same pilgrimage. As we picked up the pace, the excitement mounted as we reached our destination. As we approached the house, there was a sign that read, "Goonies on foot welcome." We ran up the steep gravel driveway with childlike awe and wonder, soaking up every detail of the house. The view of the harbor from the house was stunning. We visited Astoria, Oregon, where in 1810, the town?s namesake, John Jacob Astor, sent the Astor Expedition to set up their primary trading post for his Pacific Fur Company. This was ground breaking development as Astoria is noted as the first permanent U.S. settlement on the Pacific coast. Astoria?s prominence as a trading post was instrumental in expanding America?s economic power throughout the continental interior and throughout the Pacific.

But for me, the most important one was Steven Spielberg?s, The Goonies.

From the Truffle Shuffle to memorable lines like ?Goonies never say die, ? we were armed and ready for a hike up to the iconic house. My younger brother, Nathan and I used to watch The Goonies almost everyday when we were kids. We know every line and could go on for hours in a battle over who has more knowledge of ?the Goon-docks.? In fact, we did, via text message along my hike.

As we approached the house, there was a sign that read, ?Goonies on foot welcome.? We ran up the steep gravel driveway with childlike awe and wonder, soaking up every detail of the house. The view of the harbor from the house was stunning. The gentleman who lives there now was outside gardening, and was very friendly and happy to talk to us while we made fools of ourselves on his lawn. (We each took turns doing the Truffle Shuffle).

It was a great day.
His Spirit Sails On In My Heart: A tribute to my Dad

We said goodbye to the Caribbean with our last Panama Canal transit in early May. The highlight was a crew excursion on May 11th where we sailed America's Cup racing sailboats in Cabo San Lucas. The backdrop was the beautiful and iconic Lover's Beach and Arco rock formation. This was particularly special for me, because my dad was a sailor and spent a great deal of his time sailing his own sailboat on Mosquito Lake in Ohio. He also had a great adventure of his own on the high seas in which he sailed a large sailboat throughout Fiji and New Zealand. He loved nature and found great peace in his passion for the water and his belief in God. I really felt like he was with me that day, sailing in picturesque Cabo San Lucas. The last time I was on a sailboat was the same day my dad was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer. I'll never forget that final sailing. It was the one place he wanted to go after receiving the news. My dad was strong and had a certain wisdom and understanding about life that many people struggle their whole lives to find. I remember the look in his eyes. He had control of the sailboat that day, as he steered her toward a beautiful sunset. Control of something he loved so much, as he faced acceptance of the inevitable events that would follow. "I'm always with you," my dad said to me on so many occasions throughout our time together. From the time I was a little girl, to the last few conversations we had, he would remind me of his presence and our bond. He was right. No matter how long he is gone, or how far away from home I travel, I carry him with me everywhere I go. I felt so blessed to feel him in the wind that day and the waves as they crashed against the side of the boat. The captain let me steer as my father had let me several times before. Feeling the sails fill and take their power from the wind reminded me of all the times we had hoisted sails as a family. My father gave me my sea legs so many years ago, so that I could take charge of my own life and find meaning and purpose in each passing day. As I continue this journey at sea, I have plenty of time to reflect on the failures, loss and joys of the past several years. At times, it is overwhelming. But the one thing that is steadfast and true, is the love my parents have always shown for their children. My father and I didn't always agree or know how to reach each other. But, in the end, the bond was clear and never fades, even though he has been gone for nearly four years. I'm so grateful to have had a father who loved me and to experience his spirit in the beauty of every day.

A visit from Mama Beagle!

My mother visited me in April for a two week cruise and celebrated the Easter holiday with me onboard the Statendam. She had a wonderful visit. The crew welcomed her with open arms and took, very quickly, to calling her "Mama Beagle." The crew is made of wonderful people who spend long months away from family, friends and home life, so when family comes onboard, it feels a little more like home for everyone. Here are some highlights from her trip!We swam with Dolphins in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.My mom and I and some other members of the cast went horseback riding in Hualtuco, Mexico. The guide took us on a trail through the woods, which opened up onto a breathtakingly beautiful secluded beach. This was one of my favorite days. We had the whole beach to ourselves. Mom and I visited a banana plantation in Puerto Chiapas, Mexico and learned about banana production and how important this industry is to the local economy. We also visited a local school where we were entertained by the students who performed traditional Mexican dances for us. Our tour in Puerto Chiapas ended at a local church that was decorated modestly, yet stunningly for Holy Week. It was very humbling to see such beautiful devotion to God expressed with very little worldly means. The women of the parish prepared tamales for us to enjoy. It was wonderful to experience the culture of this small town first hand. On Good Friday we traveled into Antigua, Guatemala. Good Friday is a special day to visit this place. 100,000 people of all nationalities gather to celebrate the death of Christ with elaborate processions and devotions. I've never seen anything like it. Colorful carpets made of dyed sand and sawdust, fresh flowers and pine needles adorn the streets only to be walked on by the processions that pass by. This was an awe inspiring display of faith that I feel so blessed to have witnessed.I'm so thankful that my mom was able to come to the Statendam to visit me. One of the hardest things about this job is being away from home. Having a visit from my mom half way through my contract was exactly what I needed to help get me through the rest of my time at sea. I'm hoping she comes back for an Alaskan cruise soon!

It was wonderful to experience the culture of this small town first hand.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NVHyRAbweVo/TeLPR7RFPGI/AAAAAAAAAS0/8i3BRJ_yv-o/s400/DSCF0122.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5612275992531123298" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-p6WEr1a_INY/TeLPkeIZLHI/AAAAAAAAAS8/DCOUtE7tUDc/s400/DSCF0125.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5612276311127567474" />

This was an awe inspiring display of faith that I feel so blessed to have witnessed.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HeGLCDjoVgI/TeLRF5EPRzI/AAAAAAAAATE/pO4ZwL1xEq4/s400/DSCF0208.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5612277984805209906" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-X9s5z15tonI/TeLRa_pH3oI/AAAAAAAAATM/qJqfV86aATc/s400/DSCF0172.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5612278347347779202" />

I'm so thankful that my mom was able to come to the Statendam to visit me. One of the hardest things about this job is being away from home. Having a visit from my mom half way through my contract was exactly what I needed to help get me through the rest of my time at sea. I'm hoping she comes back for an Alaskan cruise soon!

Costa Rican Adventures!

One of the great things about working on a cruise ship is the opportunity to participate in once in a lifetime activities. I never would have thought a year ago that I would be zip lining in Costa Rica today. This was a breath taking experience, one that makes you forget any troubles you may have and simply take in the beauty of the earth. It was definitely scary at first, but after the first few zip lines, I felt like a pro. The men who took us through the zip lines were great. They really put me at ease and made me feel safe. Each of them had great "bed side manner" if you will, or should I say, "zip line manner." I imagine they have the coolest job in Costa Rica, and each of them were pleasant and enthusiastic as they reassured me of my safety...each and every time they hooked me up to the zip line...ha. There were a total of 14 zip lines. About 30 crewmembers participated in this excursion, and we all had a great time. After the adventure, we were served a traditional Costa Rican lunch of rice, beans, chicken, plantains, salad, and the most delicious fruit I have ever tasted. It is also important to note that every visit to this park helps contribute to the conservation of the rain forest.Here are some pictures from my day in the rain forest!If you would like more information about zip lining in Costa Rica, please visit www.rainforestadventure.com

ARUBA: Bus tour by day, crew party by night!!!

On April 4th, my fellow cast mates, Andrew Foote and Courtney Brady, joined me for a bus tour around the Island of Aruba. We visited the Casibari Rock formations and climbed to the top for a beautiful panoramic view of the landscape. We also stopped at the California Lighthouse which is a famous Arubian landmark. We enjoyed a beautiful view of the harbor from here, and even watch another Holland America ship pull into port. It was breathtaking. We thought we were going to spend the day touring around in this party bus, but we ended up trading it in for a more tame, air conditioned version. Here, I stand at the top of the Casibari Rock formation. These rocks are reddish in color and are surrounded by cacti. There are beautiful man made steps and walking trails that take you through the greenery and tunnels. Scientists are unsure of how such a formation came to be on a desert island, but it is thought that they are volcanic in nature. We saw many a lizard that day! The old stone California lighthouse is a well know landmark near the island's northwestern tip in the area known as "Hudishibana." The lighthouse is named for the U.S ship - the California - which sunk about two years prior to the the lighthouse's construction in 1910. The lighthouse is perched at a high seaside elevation offering a picture perfect view of the island's western coastline. CREW PARTY: Mexican Fiesta!!It was such a beautiful, balmy night as we sailed away from Aruba, and the crew enjoyed a real "backyard" barbeque on the back deck of the ship. It was wonderful! As shown here, we got to enjoy one of our favorite Filipino treats, Ensaymada, which is a buttery sweet roll with cheese inside. Ok, so they make really great Princess Leia buns as well!The barbeque transformed into a dance party that went on until about 2 am.
Miss Statendam Highlights

As a former Miss Ohio, I get asked to do some pretty cool things. Who knew I'd have the opportunity to judge a pageant while onboard the Statendam? I had the pleasure of judging the Miss Statendam 2011 pageant this March. Never having judged a drag pageant, I was so pleasantly surprised at the turnout and the careful preparation the contestant invested. We had five contestant participate, all representing different departments on the ship. A couple hundred crew members attended, and it was such an entertaining night. It's so nice to see the crew come together to relax and have fun, because everyone works such long, hard hours. Judges for Miss Statendam.Miss Statendam contestants!Stacy's Smom performed Shania Twain's "I feel like a woman" for a crowd roaring with laughter! She got extra points from me for audience participation, having jumped into the audience to work the crowd! Liam, who is one of our cadets, was a good sport and I'm so glad he participated!Kennen, aka Sasha Dynamite, performed a talent routine to Beyonce's "All the Single Ladies."Our cast dancers Courtney and Becky were back up dancers and did a great job. It was a real crowd pleaser!The captain crowned the winner!
Spring Break 2011: Puerto Vallarta

On Monday, March 21st we were excited to have an unexpected overnight in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The Statendam needed to wait for another HAL ship to arrive the next morning so we could pick up some spare engine parts. This meant an opportunity for our cast to have a much needed day of normalcy shoreside. First, myself and three other cast members joined a crew shore excursion. We took a speed boat ride to a marina that housed dolphins and sea lions. The boat ride itself was thrilling and worth the price of admission as we bounced at high speed over the waves and took in a breath taking view of the coast. We got to swim with and pet the sea lions. It was such an amazing experience to be so close to these beautiful creatures. They reminded me so much of dogs. There were two trainers who had the sea lions perform various tricks including back flips, belly flops that left us all soaked, clapping, smiling and kissing. I felt like a child full of wonder and soaked up every minute. Below are some fun pictures from our adventure.Patty Lohr, Courtney Brady, Amanda BeagleCourtney Brady, Will Shupe, Patty Lohr, Amanda BeagleAmanda Beagle, Patty Lohr, Will Shupe, Courtney BradyFollowing our afternoon adventure with the sea lions, we went out on the town and joined in the fun of Spring Break 2011. Puerto Vallarta has a beautiful and vibrant downtown area right on the water. First we went to a restaurant called Punta V. The front of the building was open to the elements and the restaurant was adorned with plush booths and sparkling chandeliers. We started with cocktails and then moved to an Italian restaurant called La Dolce Vita. I can't help myself, but whenever I have the opportunity to eat good Italian food, in particular, pizza, I seize the moment! From there we danced the night away at a discotheque called Mandala. All aboard was at 3 a.m. so we tried to take advantage of every second off the ship. Here's to hoping we get to do that again. We had so much fun and it was a day that will go down in history as the best night of our cruise ship lives.
